Overview of new and existing buildings

School on Former Factory Site

Antwerp

Ground floor

The new school site is located in a neighbourhood dominated by small houses and large warehouses. The old mustard factory is an exceptionally generous space; a moment of relief in the dense urban fabric. These industrial buildings form the core of the school and contain the student-related programmes. A new and colourful infill of walls and workplaces has been woven between the old steel trusses. The scale of the mustard factory also determines the design of the new building. A large roof covers the sunken sports hall, on top of which games can be played. On the street side, the administrative functions and staff rooms are accommodated in the new building. This also functions as a large and inviting entrance, with a view through the building block. The children walk along the richly glazed reception area, look inside the sports hall and enter the covered playground.
