Horse Farm

Schoten

The assignment involves the demolition of an existing double farm and the construction of a horse breeding farm with an integrated company house on the same location.
The existing landscape around the construction site is characterized by an orthogonal structure of old lanes and canals, bordered by beautiful old oak rows. We wish to humbly nestle the building in this existing structure and unite the diverse spatial needs of horse breeding into one. Thus we start from a single-layer volume with a square base. We make rectangular cut-outs in them, each of which focuses on a specific aspect of the landscape environment. The resulting indoor/outdoor spaces provide the desired daylight in the indoor spaces and make use of the beautiful vistas. This creates a floor plan with interior spaces that always have a direct relationship with the environment. The required higher volumes are not located on the edge, but within the perimeter of the building. In this way, the building presents itself gently to its surroundings.
