Casabella 951 – on the Royale Belge project

27.11.2023

Frederico Tranfa wrote an article for Casabella about the reconversion of Royale Belge by Bovenbouw architectuur, Caruso St John and DDS+.

‘A case of doubtful authorship’ elaborates the awareness of the energy consumption by the construction business, the environmental impact on climate change and the rising interests in heritage, renovations and reconversions by architects to reduce the environmental impact of architecture and building industry.

In an interview with Peter St John and Dirk Somers, Frederico Tranfa talkes about the shifting relation towards heritage and growing respect towards buildings ‘as found’. Humble architects push their desire for recognition into the background, taking care of the original spirit of the building. This respectful approach results in a double authorship with original designers and the renovating architects.
